President Donald Trump has chosen his adviser, Kilian Conway, to spearhead the White House's efforts to fight opiate addiction and coordinate with federal agencies.
Justice Minister Jeff Sessions said that Conway's assignment was a testament to the president's commitment to the problem, citing his experience in the field.
The White House has yet to issue a specific strategy to deal with the opioid crisis, but last month it declared a public health emergency to tackle the spread of substance abuse.
In the same vein, the White House told CBS that Conway's choice to lead these efforts does not mean a change in the role of the White House adviser. Coordination of efforts to counter opiate addiction has always been part of her work in recent months.
A government report said this month that substance abuse cost the US economy $ 504 billion in 2015.
