President Donald Trump's administration has issued permits to Eni to explore and extract oil and natural gas in the Beaufort Sea, which overlooks the northern coast of Alaska.
Eni is the first company to issue a permit to explore oil in Alaska's territorial waters since 2015.
The head of the Office of Environmental Safety and Enforcement of the Ministry of the Interior, Scott Angell, said that the responsible use of energy resources in this region is "an essential element of American energy excellence".
The Italian company wants to explore oil at a depth of more than 10 kilometers by the Beaufort Sea.
President Trump had signed an executive order to expand offshore drilling to areas where the previous administration had prevented oil exploration.
The tax reform bill passed by the Senate Budget Committee on Tuesday includes a clause allowing oil companies to explore Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Reserve, which opponents see as a threat to the environment.
