President Donald Trump will not support the Republican candidate for Alabama Senate seat Roy Moore, who faces charges of sexual harassment.
A White House official told the Associated Press that Trump would not travel to Alabama to support Moore's campaign ahead of the Dec. 12 election.
The president did not support the Republican candidate, who has been charged with sexual harassment, despite criticizing Democratic challenger Doug Jones, whom he described as weak in fighting crime and illegal immigration. The president said Jones' election would be a disaster.
Republican Sen. Lindsey Gram (South Carolina) had discussed whether Moore could win or lose, adding that the first possibility would raise questions about the truth surrounding his sexual harassment charges and whether the Senate would have to remove him from office. The debate comes after an Alabama woman accused Moore of "sexual misconduct" with her in 1979 when she was 14 years old and the 32-year-old Senate candidate, according to a Washington Post report two weeks ago.
Four other women told the newspaper Moore was courted when they were 18 or younger, and he was in his early thirties and was an assistant state attorney.
