The US state of Maryland began to allow the sale of medical marijuana to its pain-stricken residents and stopped scores of people in front of a licensed center that began selling the substance after the first shipment arrived on Friday night.
Maryland passed a law regulating the sale of medical marijuana in 2003, but the implementation of the law was delayed by the need for specialized medical centers and no specialist center was set up to start work.
The law was changed in 2014 to allow doctors to prescribe medical marijuana for patients with chronic diseases.
According to the Associated Press, medical marijuana will be available for any chronic condition that was not used for drug therapy.
More than half of the United States and Washington DC have launched the Comprehensive Marijuana Program.
