Americans throw $ 165 billion worth of food a year

الأمريكيون يرمون مواد غذائية بقيمة 165 مليار دولار سنويا
According to a joint study by the Harvard Law School and the US Natural Resources Protection Council, Americans receive about 40 percent of the food they buy.

MarketWatch reported that the value of these wasted food amounts to $ 165 billion a year, equivalent to 72.5 million tons of food and waste.

According to experts, this situation arises because, in the United States, there is virtually no clear and specific concept of labeling of food products. It is usually written "sell by" any period of consumption or use by any "valid even" and the first label is specifically placed for distributors and retailers and does not mean that the food is spoiled.

In addition, individual manufacturers can set different dates in their own formats that you specify at their own discretion.

The study shows that more than 80% of Americans throw food and food in the garbage before it expires due to confusion in punctuation.

Recently, the Food Marketing Institute and the Food Producers Association, two organizations that unite retailers and food producers, have recently developed a simplified system for determining expiry dates.

The system proposes to use the phrase "best if used" to refer to products that retain their maximum nutritional characteristics before the specified date but remain safe for consumption after that date. As well as the "use before" label.

The new labeling system is expected to be used as of June 2018 and will help reduce the amount of food that is unduly destroyed and thrown.
